The complete collection of landmark BBC Radio dramas of Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe mysteries.
Philip Marlowe is the archetypal noir detective: wisecracking and world-weary, hardboiled yet honourable. This volume includes all eight dramatisations of Raymond Chandler's groundbreaking crime novels featuring his iconic hero.
The Big Sleep
Marlowe is consulted by a wealthy family man with two big problems: his children.
Farewell My Lovely
Marlowe's search for an ex-con's ex-girlfriend leads him into danger.
The High Window
When a rare gold coin is stolen from her collection, Mrs Murdoch hires Philip Marlowe to find it.
The Lady in the Lake
Businessman Derace Kingsley hires Marlowe to find his estranged wife Crystal.
The Little Sister
Commissioned to find Orfamay Quest's missing brother, Marlowe is drawn into the glamorous film world of Hollywood.
The Long Goodbye
Marlowe befriends a drunk named Terry Lennox, but comes to regret doing him a favour.
Playback
Hired to follow the mysterious Betty Mayfield, Marlowe soon finds that he is being tailed too...
Poodle Springs
Newly-married Marlowe puts his bride aside to look for a gambler on the run.
Starring Toby Stephens as Philip Marlowe, these stylish, suspenseful dramatisations – full of witty, ironic dialogue and colourful characters – bring the beautiful, corrupt world of California in the '40s and '50s to luminous life.

Toby Stevens and the cast are great.
Really atmospheric.
One of the posters went on a little rant but still liked this drama 😉

He has also been James Bond on radio - can't be many other actors to have played two such iconic and diverse characters.
These are good productions, well scripted and acted, and represent the best efforts in translating Chandler to radio. There's another version of The Long Goodbye available too, starring the American actor Ed Bishop. My problem with them - and its a personal thing - is that, by necessity, they have to be edited and shortened, in order to achieve sensible running times. Why is that a problem? Because Chandler's original books are just so superb, so brilliantly crafted, that to lose even a sentence seems a shame. This is particularly true of The Long Goodbye, where significant sections and conversations are omitted. I understand why, but it then becomes, in my humble opinion only, a kind of 'watered down' Chandler, missing out on sentences and expressions that are so wonderful. Read the first few pages of the novel version of The Long Goodbye, then compare with the production here, to get my drift. Translating any great work of literature into other formats- audio or film etc - is always challenging, and these productions do as good a job as any, but a full-length reading of the actual novels would do more justice to Chandler's mastery, though it would take a few more hours out of our busy lives. Good effort though. We'll worth a listen.

I know this series, it is really good hence the 5 stars.
However I was moved to comment due to the previous comment disparaging the BBC and the License Fee, without giving any context whatsoever to the complaint.
The BBC, like many European public broadcasters, is advertisement free. Yes, you read right, NO advertisement of any sort. Hence a fee, again, like many European countries.
The fee is to pay for all that. Besides, the whole world knows about the quality of the BBC productions, next to no one other than the previous poster mentions any 'woke' agenda.
An agenda of any sort is against the regulations of the BBC which must remain neutral in all cases, and has throughout the years.
Maybe by American conservative standards it may seem liberal, but not to the British, nor to other Europeans.
As for the police, in most countries if you do not pay your bill someone will come knocking, thankfully in most countries without a gun, while in the US one may have to fear for ones life in such instances.

A weird place to rant about the bbc. Not really fitting and not much of a review either.
Anyways, this full cast dramatisation of a multitude of Philip Marlowe's adventures has excellent acting, sound design and score. Raymond Chandler's own prose is just as captivating if not more so in this form. I highly recommend this collection to any fan of noir and detective fiction.

Despite my dislike of most things BBC today, for their ‘woke liberal left’ agenda; I recognise their ability too produce excellent audio drama.
For those unaware of the BBC, and their ability to track down and ultimately if needed bring the police to your door!!! For what you may indeed ask?
For the crime of watching TV without a licence, you may never (like me for reasons stated above) even think about watching their agenda filled output on tv;
However should you dare watch any other televised show from any station anywhere in the world via say, your cable or satellite provider on their advertised schedule, do this without paying the BBC ‘their licence fee’ then be prepared for the consequences.
Their ‘affectionately’ named ‘goons’ will, if you have ignored the many letters sent by the BBC which get more strongly worded the longer your ‘HOME’ is not registered with them as having a licence; If the agents of the BBC believe you have the ability to watch live broadcast shows on any tv schedules and you refuse them access to inspect your home and look in any rooms they choose can and have, albeit not common, get a court order and bring the police to ensure they have ease of access to inspect your home.....(check YouTube)....
Thankfully the BBC licence fee to listen to the radio even online was scrapped some years ago, BUT watch the BBC tv shows even on catchup on their iplayer app without a BBC tv licence, do so at your own risk, for if taken to court you will face very heavy fines.....
Don’t let any of this worry you as I said, BBC RADIO licence fee was abolished some years ago now..... enjoy their mostly excellent audio dramas free in the knowledge; that neither bbc agents nor the police will come knocking on your door. The above to my certain knowledge is applicable only to residents living in the UK..
